The mood of the nation was not anti EU. Cameron gambled the long term economy of the nation, and other matters, on a party political ploy. He dragged statesman's decisions into the short term party political level. Cameron was a complete irresponsible idiot.

@mortelski5814 There was no underlying strong discontent with the EU whatsoever by the vast majority of the population to warrant a referendum. They were quite happy. Then Teresa May showed her political naivety. The vote was 50-50ish in an advisory referendum. She could have just ignored it if she wanted to. If she was savvy she could have approached the EU with the prime concerns, which were also concerns other other member states, and said let's talk to address them. If there was an agreement to change then give a time limit, if not met we are out. That was above her intellect.
