  1. The Allies were building merchant ships faster than they were being sunk. The newer ships were faster and larger than those sunk. Some could outrun U-Boats. Once escort carriers were equipped with specialist anti-submarine planes, the German U-Boat threat was a whimper.

  2.  @andrewallen9993  The Swordfish had more merchant ship kills than any other plane. It outlived its successor. An amazing plane.
