Craig Thompson I do believe the English first spotted and charted the islands. The Argentine claim the islands is so thin it is not worth debating.

The British kept the merchant ships way out east out of range of Argentine planes. The Argentine air force could not sink the ships even if they tried. They only way was to commit suicide in one way missions.

The Argentines did not like the idea of parking planes at Port Stanley airport as Vulcan bombers were bombing the airport. They could not stop the high flying Vulcan's operating from Ascension Island - which were also adept at low flying in their NATO role against the USSR. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Black_Buck The airport was also under constant naval gunfire from ships way out to sea..

The Argentines kept their best troops on the mainland in case of fighting of some sort with British/Commonwealth/Chilean troops on Argentine soil.
