Comments by "John Burns" (@johnburns4017) on "Al Murray explains why the Battle of Arnhem was one of Britain’s greatest defeats" video.
Market Garden was not to end the war by Christmas. It was to set up the northern point of a pincer on the Ruhr. The US First Army was to be the southern pincer point. The British Second Army under Dempsey was to consolidate at Arnhem in preparation for the advance on the Ruhr, which was not a date yet fixed as the US forces were static struggling around Aachen. Market Garden was a corps above Eindhoven, far too small an operation to run off to Berlin.

One third of equipment was taken back to England.

@jim.franklin 1. General Browning ignoring intel about German forces in the area, He never, do not go by the film 2. Officers failing to tell Monty that they lacked sufficient aircraft to launch the attack as he planned, needing multiple drops. Monty never planned it. RAF offered to man the aircraft to do a second run. FAAA refused. _3. The Radios issued not working _ They worked. High iron content in the area affected radios. Also many were out of range. 4. The weather in England caused the delay in the drops for 4th Brigade (My Grandfather) and the the Polish Brigade (General Sosabowski). That the weather did. 5. The 4th and Polish Brigades being dropped so far from Arnhem they were unable to provide practical support They were only on the rescue mission. 6. The US failure to secure the Nijemgen Bridge was THE major failure, Correct. 7. Failure of the RAF and US to be allowed to provide air cover to aid the ground troops and stop the free movement of German forces, especially armour. Correct.

@mootedtols4865 The RAF defeated the Luftwaffe over the Dunkirk pocket. The Germans army was successfully kept at bay by the British and French while the evacuation was going on. The Royal Navy controlled the Channel. The British won the Battle of Dunkirk. All equipment losses was made up by September by new designed arms.

@mootedtols4865 A battle emerged called the Battle of Dunkirk. The British achieved their aims the Germans never. British won.

Did you also vote for Trump the last time as well?

@lyndoncmp5751 101st forgot to defend the 26 km long road between Veghel and Grave. It is exactly where the Germans counter-attacked and interrupted the supply lines. Horrocks when advancing saw no US troops on the road forming this airborne carpet, only Germans. He communicated with 101st telling them to put men there. They replied that have no plans to.

@lyndoncmp5751 Ike stayed there as the under sea comms line to London was there.

You got number 6, right many of the others were off mark. Monty never planned it. See my other posts on this vid.

@jim.franklin My post still stands. I knew four men at Market Garden, one my uncle. But that is meaningless.

@nickdanger3802 Rambo, a quiz. Name the bridge the 82nd failed to seize? 20 points for the correct answer.

There as no German armour in Arnhem on the jump day. The two SS panzer divisions, 9th and 10th, were greatly depleted in numbers with no armour, being mainly infantry. The British had destroyed their armour in Normandy.

@Jeremy-y1t You need some facts... WW2 ♦ 60 to 65 million people died; ♦ 27 million Soviets died at the hands of the Germans; ♦ The only war in which more civilians were killed than military men. 80% of total - 48 to 53 million; ♦ The only war where the losers killed 75% of the people; ♦ The USA lost 419,000 people military & civilian; ♦ Britain lost 450,000 military & civilian; ♦ 75% of German soldiers were killed by the Soviets - 5 five million;

@roodborstkalf9664 Beevor's book is garbage, not homing in on the 82nds failure at Nijmegen.
2
@roodborstkalf9664 Give us the page focusing on the 82nds failure, and the reason for the failure, to seize the Waal bridge on the 1st day?
2
Dunkirk was not a defeat. Tobruk was strategically useless - only Churchill insisted it be retained. Gazala? please!
2
@OldWolflad Browning was not there to micro manage proven generals.

@andywilliams7323 Most the advisors regretted dealing with the film company as they ignored all they said.
