The Austin A30 was engineered and designed by two aeronautical engineers. It was the world's first chassiless car. The two guys did not like the styling, but the shape was forced on them by Austin. To improve air flow under the car they wanted the engine bay sealed. They were overruled. The SAAB, also designed by aeronautical engineers, came out about the same time. One of the two aeronautical engineers contacted SAAB in the early 1990s, who obliged in supplying copies of the original drawings, to determine which was was the first chassis-less car. The SAAB was mainly chassis-less, but let down by having a small frame the engine sat on. The A30 had no frame whatsoever. The A30 was ultra reliable. The A Series engine was the world's most produced engine. It was made under licence by Nissan in Japan.

Much of the running gear and suspension from the A30/A35 went into the MG Midget/Sprite.
