@slovene ball The Germans were very successful in surprise attacks in the early stages as well. Wars of attrition the Axis could not win.

@TheImperatorKnight There was four Baltic states, Finland amongst them. Finland was ruled for 100 years by Russia until WW1. The Baltic states are stacked on top of each other, with Finland at the top. Finland applied to be in the Nordic Council being accepted, so many think Finland is in Scandinavia, which it is not. Their language is nothing remotely like the Scandinavian (Germanic ) languages - like Welsh is totally remote to English. Many Scandinavians regard Finns as being Russians, which they are in origin originating from the Urals. The Soviets said they were just reclaiming lost territory regarding Finland, as the early Bolsheviks should never have allowed Finland independence. Also the Finnish border was in artillery range of Leningrad.

@Ron P The Soviets offered Finland land twice the size of the land they wanted from Finland, for defence purposes. The only nasty part of it was wanting the Hanko Peninsular, the most southern part of Finland to build a base. The Soviets wanted the Finnish border 20 miles further away from Leningrad, out of artillery range. The Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact in August 1939. determined spheres of interest. Finland was in the Soviet sphere, with the other three Baltic states. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania had Soviet military bases imposed on them, but the countries were regarded as neutral still with their own governments. The USSR wanted one base in Finland at Hanko and an exchange of land. Finland would still be neutral with its own government.
