Dunlop at Liverpool was at the old Mustang aircraft factory on the airport. They were still using equipment from Mustang manufacture in WW2 in the late 1970s. Crap company, crap products.

The Triumph Acclaim, a rebadged Honda, was made in the UK. It proved that British workers, when given quality components and state of the art manufacturing plant can built cars to the same levels as the Japanese. Well the workers did not matter, it was the management that mattered. They put in the state of the art plant.

They depended on the Metro for survival. It was a Mini with a new body. The Mini subframes were narrow so the Metro had a heavy body with wheels inboard look - outdated. The A series engine dated from 1950 - 30 years old. The management were in cloud cuckoo land. But they blamed the unions of course. Never themselves.

@Leylandman1 British cars had design for sure. The engineering on how they were assembled was lacking, leaving damp traps that caused rust. The QA was poor to none existent. I recall a neighbour who worked at Ford who bought a new Ford. After 18 months he was filling in a hole in the door. He said the sheet metal they use is poor quality being stored outside. Some sheets had rust on them when being thrown into the press. Men would use plastic filler on the bodies before spraying. And he walked around the factory following he car being made. Tell the guys and they do it properly for you.

That is common even today in having multiple companies supplying parts.

@chrispenn715 Nonsense. You didn't take a blind bit of notice of the film.

@Pedro DLR Ireland was full of British cars.

@Pedro DLR In the 1970s most cars in Ireland were British made. They took a lot of second hand cars from NI as well, so parts sales there were brisk. British cars tended to be cheaper as well.

This is for any car. Take away the components that a manufacturer never made, and there is very little of the car to see.
