Germany has hydrogen fuel cell trains in fare paying service. The UK is to trial them on the Liverpool to Chester line via Runcorn. Electrification of the UK rail network, which is very expensive to install and maintain, has been put on hold in view of introducing hydrogen fuel cell trains. These will be highly cost effective. The initial run out for trains is electric/diesel hybrids, which can be easily converted to hydrogen/electric keeping the same electric running gear. Some will be capable of running under electric wires, then on diesel, then eventually hydrogen, when running away from the electric wires.
Diesel trains pour out a high level of pollution in urban areas, so all looks good for hydrogen trains. Hydrogen will probably not be suitable for cars, just large vehicles like: trains, ships, trucks, buses, etc. In the UK and Germany the level of fossil fuel free electricity generation is high. So when no wind or at night, the stored energy, in hydrogen, is used.
