  1. A heat pump is the same as a fridge compressor. It moves heat, from one place to another. A fridge compressor moves heat out of the cabinet to the metal frame behind. The inside gets cool because the heat inside is moved to the metal frame outside, which in turn dissipates the heat to the surrounding cooler air. This provides cooling. It can be reversed moving the heat from outside to inside, then the metal frame gets cool and the inside of the fridge gets hot. So heating and cooling, A/C and heating, all in one unit.

  2. Jason, it is not energy in, it is heat in. That is why it is called a heat pump.
