  1. The switched out cylinders are a power sapping drag. EcoMotors (backed by Bill Gates) made an opposed piston one cylinder engine that is balanced. Two can be coupled using and electric clutch. In low loads only one of the engines is used and the other engine 100% decoupled and not moving forming no drag whatsoever. More power needed and the second engine is switched in. The two cooling systems can be common to ensure both are up to temperature at all times.
