The criticism is the same for any side valve engine. Straight-4 side valve engines had the advantage of not being so high, giving lower hood lines and lower centre of gravity.

What this engine needed was valves either side of the cylinder, not on the same side, but that makes the block too wide. Four small valves per cylinder, with two either side of the cylinder, would means the the block need not be too wide.

I recall this old engine was used by a French military vehicle (Simca) into the 1980s, or even 90s. I do not know why, as many vastly superior engines, smaller in overall size where available. This engine was used by the British universal carrier (Bren Gun carrier) in WW2. It was a UK made Ford engine.
