I assume the exhaust turbo and the air compressor are on the same shaft going by the drawing?

Many ships and nearly all modern cruise liners, use electric motors to turn the propellers. The diesel engines are just generators. I have always wondered why they do not have turbos in the exhaust turning a generator to assist the electric propeller. It must be worth it as ships use an amazing amount of fuel. The world's largest 15 diesel powered cargo ships put out the same emissions as all the world's diesel 'cars'. The largest container ships take 35 tons of fuel just to get moving from stop. To get a large container ship just moving from stop, it takes the same amount of fuel to run a car continuously 24/7, returning 35mpg for 27 years. These container ships carry 14 to 19,000 containers. Put the containers on trucks nose to tail, they will stretch on a road around 190 miles long. So, saving 5% of fuel using a turbo on the exhaust, on the world's 15 largest cargo ships makes a difference in emissions and also the emissions of the fuel refining and fuel distribution.

I believe Ilmor in England developed the engine.
