Mazda a number of years ago said if they were to make a new rotary it would be for a hybrid and it would also sell as a portable genny. This is to keep volumes high to justify manufacturing setup. The market in small portable genny's is substantial - the rotary is one third of the size and weight of the equiv piston engine. Mazda have developed a rotary with Toyota. I cannot see this new ign complexity taking off, as simpler solutions will be about. Pure ICE engines are being outlawed, only electric hybrid versions will exist fr a while. ICE engines can only be for range extending and highly specialised uses. The end will come quick, very quick. EV cars cannot sell fast enough. Manufacturers cannot make the battery factories fast enough. Sale prices soon will equal ICE cars. Battery technology is progressing - look at graphene - 4 times the energy storage and lighter. So a Tesla can then go over 1,300 on one charge - or have a battery pack four times smaller, and 1/5th the weight to give more room and efficiency as less weight to move around. A lot of money to develop this new ign system, I doubt it will be worth it at this stage of the ICEs lifespan. The ICE is going the way of the steam engine without doubt. It looks like batteries for small vehicles like cars, etc, and hydrogen fuel cells for large vehicles like ships and fast trains. Nice to know what they are doing in desperation to keep the ICE engine alive though.
