Engine braking does put stress of the gears and gearbox bearings.

Any stress on the gears and gear bearings will wear it out quicker and make the gearbox rougher over time. My point is that engine braking does have a negative, a minor one but a negative. BTW, I use a manual transmission and engine braking using the brakes to assist the engine braking just gently touching them. I rarely change brake pads.

Modern engines on engine braking act as a 100% air pump as no fuel is injected above 1,000-1,500 rpm depending on model. The clean air cleans out the air flow route through the engine.

Moritz Any oil passing the piston rings would be blown out of the exhaust.

The only oil that would be burnt would be from the last exhaust stroke onwards. Oil passing prior to that goes out of the exhaust.
