You need to read up on the history of the Buick/Rover engine. In 1960 Buick made a superb short block lightweight engine for the time - even a cast iron version was made. Users did not put the right radiator inhibitor in the engines - it is aluminium - causing problems. So Buick decided to drop this economical and advanced for the time engine, as it was misunderstood in the USA. Also as fuel in the USA was too cheap - pennies - economy never mattered in the USA.
Rover was looking at producing a new engine in 1963, saw, and were baffled, that Buick was discontinuing the engine, which was exactly what they wanted fitting their engine family. They pretty well sealed the deal on the floor of a motor show, saving Rover a fortune, and time, on R&D.
Rover took the engine and then proceeded to change it to their requirements, even having the head engineer of the Buick engine project in England while this was going on, so he could be referred to as a consultant - he was bored stiff not doing much. As time went on, little of the Buick design was left. Even the casting was changed as well.
When BMW bought Rover, the Rover engineers were told to design cars to accommodate BMW engines and put BMW engines into the existing range. Rover engineers were not that impressed with BMW engines, knowing their own V-8 inside out. The Rover engineers knew how to fine tune the engine for various applications, with most BMW engines not having that flexibility. They would design car engine bays not to take BMW engines, to the annoyance of BMW in Munich.
The Rover V-8 is the finest V-8 ever made. It was also used by Range Rover, Land Rover, Rover cars, MG, Morgan, TVR, etc, in saloon cars, SUVs, sports cars, rugged 4x4 vehicles (the US Rangers have Land Rovers with the engine) - the lot. It was also made under licence in Australia by Leyland.
When it was discontinued, critics said it had another 10 years of life left in it, the design was still sound. Replacing the tooling was a reason why the engine was discontinued in 2006. It was made for 46 years.
