The British Army saved the Beetles by having British forces in Germany buy them. They bought 20,000 painted British Amy green. Ivan Hirst was the British officer in charge. For a year the factory re-conned and repaired British Army vehicles, under REME, then after made the Beetle.
Hirst admired the design, engineering and use of metals in the Beetle, trying to get British manufacturers interested in the Beetle, with all turning it down. He mocked them, saying, "there probably was not enough cast iron in them." He offered the car to Ford, who said, "the car is not worth a damn". So Hirst took control of the manufacturing.
