▪ Electric fuel pumps and fuel filters were easy to retrofit. ▪ The ignition could also be improved with electronic ignition. ▪ The cooling with retro fitted electric water pump and an electric cooling fan. ▪ Modern fully synthetic oils make matters far, far better ▪ Modern fuels make matters far, far, better. ▪ Could even install an electronic single point fuel injection system. The simple engine could be made far more efficient.

In France they taxed heavily cars over a certain cc, not HP. Most cars use only a fraction of the HP available most of the time. There is lots of HP available that is not being used. To access all this power you need to highly rev the engine. High revving engines vibrate producing lots of noise. Constantly highly revving an average engine will cause early failure. So the French designed smaller engines to rev highly to access all the HP available without any mechanical problems. That is why 2CVs and Panhards (see Jay Leno on his Panhard) could move well enough in road speed terms and acceleration, but you needed to rev them hard. So, you are using most of the power available in the engine, most of the time, making them more efficient in many ways, which is not the case with most engines. All because of the French taxation system.

@ I read that is not a problem using the correct types of rubber. Maybe leaving oil changes for far too long may accelerate decay. Fully synthetic oils may be the answer.

@Demonslayer20111 A 50 year old engine would have been rebuilt by now using superior gaskets and seals. Using the proper fully synthetic oils will ensure full lubrication of vital parts. Which was not the case 50 years ago, with oils that were in comparison to today just about lubricating. The correct fully synthetic oil overcomes the small galleries of this abortion of an engine design.

why?

@paulbird3216 Yep. And also at times over-cooling the engine. But solvable using electric fans. Mods like : 1) Electronic ignition; 2) Electric fan. 3) Fuel injection; Numbers 1 and 2 greatly improved matters. All three greatly improved the engine. Well they improve any old engine really. The oil cooler can be done away with by using modern fully synthetic oils. There were also mods giving superior interior heating as well.

The 2CV had to be revved highly to get any HP out of them. They make a racket, but most of the noise is air being moved via the mechanical cooling fan. I saw one that was modified with an electric cooling fan and electronic ignition. It was much quieter most of the time as the fan was switched out a lot of the time.

@PrimoStracciatella Yes. It sounded like the drivers were reckless doing damage to the engines. They were not.

@stephenwhited1833 If you want the original look and feel then fine. If you want to improve the engine and its running and its reliability (a seized engine is not nice) then do what I suggest making it last longer, and you still have the same look and feel.

Only good for high revving turning a generator. Mazda's new Wankel engine does it better. Wankel engines are more efficient using hydrogen. Electric and hydrogen are the future, so the Wankel look the better bet. Then the Liquid Piston rotary is better again.
