All cults are like that. We call them "sects" in Europe, as most of them pretend to be a religion, but in reality cults can be anything from commercial ones like LuLaRoe, or Herbalife that killed a bunch of people by denying them medical care, or Amway, whose presentation friends dragged us to looked like a New Age religious ceremony, to bloody self-proclaimed Templars. I lost a lot of friends and family to various cults. Some were led to the grave, others to prison, many simply alienated at those who don't follow the same guru. It's horrible.

American media is extremely horrible, and not just because of biases, as even so-called liberal media puts both, say, flat-Earthers, and normal people, on the same ground, pretending to be objective, which is ALWAYS in favor of liars.

There's a balance between freedom of speech and faith and defeating destructive cults. Almost no country makes a distinction legally, they don't want to be seen to be persecuting religion. This costs votes. Imagine if quarter of American population had their churches raided because so many of their Pentecostal churches are culty. The way cults get done is if they break some secular law, like Scientology members including Ron Hubbard's wife spent jail time for kidnapping a guy and holding him against his will. In my city Odesa, a "Templar" cult similar to Scientology was arrested for planning to overthrow government, and it took martial law and more than 2 years of case building to stop them, the cult existed since early 2010s, I lost family members to it but was powerless because we have freedom of religion in Ukraine and if we start arresting these guys the Western media will start screaming how fascist we are here, again.

@marquitaarmstrong399 Mormons are very similar to scientology. Catholics are not, for starters, there's NO mystery beliefs Catholic church holds that are hidden from anyone but the highest members. They're just regular religion with their own issues they're SLOWLY sorting out (reformation helped), you don't have to pay anything at all, you don't work 90 hour weeks for them, they don't control your personal life (ideally, we need to fight to keep religious figures AND the government out of our bedrooms)... also imagine Catholics forcing someone to do abortions, this is like the opposite.

Another former member said their method of controlling children is very ineffective and that majority (3/4) of kids who grew up in Scientology leave when they're teens. So these guys escaping isn't unusual, but her being a niece of the leader makes it special, but as you heard, parents weren't here enough to indoctrinate them fully.

He's guilty of supporting them, but I would say he probably isn't aware of the most heinous things they do, as they are known for treating the celebrities with "kids gloves". Of course he's adult and there's info outside and he knows more internal stuff than any people outside the cult, but yeah, these cults hide SOME atrocities from everyone but the leader. Most cults, when people broke out, had to be pieced by piece: i.e. in NXIVM the lady knew about branding, but a guy she confided to didn't BUT he knew about sex trafficking, so everyone knows SOMETHING but nobody knows it all.
