The wackiest thing is having English poet Byron joining in as a volunteer, financing a unit of Albanians, and dying there because stupid doctors bled him with dirty instruments.

@paragguruji3223 then it's different to us because despite so many forced to fight on Soviet side, nobody really had a choice, just mass draft and my mum's generation didn't have grandfathers alive.

Oh it's a complex thing, but basically, Commonwealth still exists and countries like Canada, Australia and plenty in Africa or small Island nations in oceans are still part of it with nominally British king or queen at the helm, and a hundred years ago they would have more control over them, they just gradually got more sovereignty. So that was the goal of that faction in Ireland, Canadify themselves. Others wanted liberation from the start.

@johnkeefer8760 Poland BEGGED France and England to help them against russia and Germany every time, were always let down. Ukraine now sees that West is hopeless and would rather see millions slaughtered than fight, absolutely nobody in Central or Eastern Europe is against foreign interference. Polish want US nukes on their soil, because without nuclear weapons you get invaded. As to secession vs independence, apples to oranges, even UN recognizes right of nations to self-determination (Irish from British, or Finns, Vainakhs of Ichkeria and Ukrainians from russia, but it doesn't let a slave owner caste to declare they're a new country because election didn't go their way, same with russia backed "separatists" in Ukraine.

But Iran always cracks down on rebellions and nothing comes out of it for generations. Times have changed. There won't be an uprising in russia and certainly not China. The only way to defeat fascism is the same as it was during World War 2: by taking their capital and forcing capitulation. Trust me, we expected russian mothers to rise up in protest the first dead sons come home in a casket, in 2014. It's been TEN years of war now and almost nobody in russia is against the war. They'd give their sons to the last. Times of empires giving up because of a few millions dead are over.

It's the other way around, as a Ukrainian I am not surprised that when the best people were started to death, others fled abroad, the few who remained were heavily indoctrinated by the empire. Genocide always makes survivors more compliant, that's the point.

I wish people would understand more than "locals totally supporting empire" are often just settlers who took natives homes. Like the majority of pro-russians in Ukraine were russians in the first place that were sent to work in mines or to take locals homes after man made.famine.

Idealism won tho, Ireland is not part of the commonwealth. "Realists" claimed Soviet Union won't collapse and that resisting russia is futile. They're always end up wrong.

British are kind of masters of glorifying losses themselves, the most famous battle they took part in is charge of the Light Brigade, I guess heroic sacrifices are far more motivating than steamrolling, Greeks have their Thermopylae, Americans - Alamo, and we got Kruty.
