  1. Because Greek mythology is mostly about psychological disorder. Unconscious fear that your child will outgrow you is seen as annihilation, manifested in prophecies like that. You can see a lot of parents still do everything in their power to ruin their children's lives out of that unconscious. The only thing more Freudian than this story is Oedipus Rex.
