People didn't pretend it was good, people pretended they watched it, the whole joke was not that the movie was bad but that nobody gave a crap about it so much we invented our own story and events instead. Execs overvalued the meme appeal. Especially when the ENTIRE meme was not actually watching it.

  2.  @AndyBonesSynthPro  Madame Web got infamous for badly cut trailer and notably had the lead actress distance herself from it as admittedly she acted normally they just made her look bad by splicing unrelated dialogue in a tone whiplash way. In other words, “He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders, right before she died.”
