IaiJUTSU is the discipline that goes around drawing technique, while IaiDO is the martial art that based on it but is actually a whole style with tons of different schools and branches. He likely referred to that.

Yeah that's correct for the Iliad, which the movie is (very loosely) based on.

"swords were not battle weapons historically" looks a Roman legions... but yeah, we have a stereotype based on ancient Rome which were more an exclusion than the law, AND ALSO HAD SPEARS ANYWAY.

" that inning itself is a very bad thing to use vs an armored foe " Katanas, in general, were not used in warfare, only as a backup weapon. The whole combat arts with swords that we know of were developed during Edo period or later, when guns were the main weapons of war, and were designed to be used by police and duelists. And I suppose he meant Iaido, not Iaijutsu. The whole martial art that includes the quickdraw techniques but not only that.

To avoid being copyright stricken.

@RuerlKhan they did use the sword for defence, yes. The back edge and sides for parrying. Pretty sure longsword schools in Europe did the same, though others used bucklers in fencing.
