The whole combat arts with swords that we know of were developed during Edo period or later, when guns were the main weapons of war, and were designed to be used by police and duelists. And I suppose he meant Iaido, not Iaijutsu. The whole martial art that includes the quickdraw techniques but not only that.

  6.  @RuerlKhan  they did use the sword for defence, yes. The back edge and sides for parrying. Pretty sure longsword schools in Europe did the same, though others used bucklers in fencing.
