One of the late-Soviet period buildings I lived in Ukraine was like that. Even though it was made from reinforced concrete, the cement connecting the blocks was so bad you could clear it away with a brush... it was mostly sand. We had one wall nearly collapse and had to fix it with new cement but the parts that are too big to fix with your own hands get the foam as filler. Foam is used around windows, door frames, and between insulation material to make the walls warmer, but also fixes big holes you can't just put putty in.

Socialist bloc buildings are just as bad, we're just lucky there's less earthquakes in Europe. I can't imagine buildings made basically of sand in Odesa surviving something stronger than 7.0 earthquake. Old ones from imperial times probably... but anything made after 1920 and before 1991 is barely holding on.

@TheViettan28 the op's point, I think, wasn't that a lot of concrete is good but that they already use a lot of it on top floors, instead of making bottom stronger. They cut costs on the foundation, which is a no-no.

"Global south?" Turkey is near Europe, in Northern Hemisphere. Also, Syria, the other country that suffered even worse has a russia-backed anti-western dictator dynasty in power for decades. Hardly capitalist. So much misinformation in your comment.

They had thousands of buildings collapse, of course some were filmed on phones, especially after people heard of the first collapses and started filming everything. There was two big Earthquakes that day. First very early so people knew they're in the middle of a disaster.

@muhammadfarhun1197 but they already use the money. Building companies pocket the money or give bribes to corrupt inspectors to cut the cost on building. People shouldn't give up food to have money to fix that, construction companies and government should just steal less.

The political will and money make it almost impossible in most cases. Also, corruption doesn't help.

@Zaydan Alfariz Assad was destroying Syria for years until he almost lost, so called russians to finish destroying his country. The russia is not west, and it's the country that carpet-bombed Aleppo to the ground.

Relax, nobody said or implied that, they are just talking about region being close to Syria is all.
