He managed to look halfway decent while being thicc and imposing, plus shining with prosperity. Also, power. As said above, families tried to make it by throwing daughters at nobles, especially true in Christian countries where polygamy was banned. In China or Middle East they'd just stuff harems with dozens to thousands of concubines, made of widows, prisoners of war, noble daughters and stuff.

  3.  The Pasty British Guy From Wonderwoman  fraud, basically. Like, you have a wife in one city, never divorced, married another woman in other town, but polygamy is illegal. If it will be found out you were already married when you had the ceremonies then the second marriage would be illegitimate.

  4. Power struggle, basically. Not ideological, political reasons. Some families were Catholic, some Protestant and supporting the clergy of either would up your legitimization of rule.
