The entire American civil war happened because USA was one of the LAST western countries where slavery was still legal, and banning it didn't magically change power structures, as its consequences and segregation still existed way into 1960s! I mentioned that I actually pay taxes in USA and have more rights to decide how American government works than Elon Musk (who DOESN'T pay taxes), but USAtians claimed that it means I am either in USA, or have a business there, while form W-8BEN that YouTube makes people sign explicitly says I'm neither and takes 30% off for nothing. Also no other country does that. Literally, YouTube ad revenue is now minus US tax ON TOP of the cut Google takes. NO OTHER COUNTRY TAXES IT! They're so greedy, they're the only country that wants to grab maximum taxes from people in third world countries, greed, greed, greed, then they get surprised when we cheer their plane crashes.

  7.  @CosmicGate184  Sorry to barge into conversation but I am from Ukraine and Yugoslavia was our first mission in UN, and when peacekeepers from the West fled away from Srebrenica and others, Ukrainian troops defended Zepa despite threats by Serbs to be head them, and prevented a massacre. Very proud of our boys on their first mission instead of trying to be well-liked and going the path of least resistance, standing their ground and saving Bosnian lives from those who we now call "the Balkan rusnia". Oh, and we also still haven't forgiven bloc voting taking away Eurovision victory in 2007, where Serduchka had obviously better remembered song than Molitva.

  8. @ingemarsjoo4542  I dont know why it's common in English to call Krepostnoye pravo "serfdom", when it fits the definition of chattel slavery, as kripaki were sold and bought, and their children were property of a pomeshchik for generations.. It was a abolished in 1861 but renewed in 1930-60s as kolkhoz, my grandma didn't have a passport and wasn't allowed to move from her village or earn money, only "trudodni", tokens that could be exchanged for food at breadlines. She was only able to escape that by signing up to work in mines in Donbas, widowed at 19 which was a regular thing at the time in 1960s here.

  9. @ see, that's actually not unusual, before metric system even same measurements varied by date or region a lot, shaku in Japan was different depending on era, and Roman cubit wasn't the same as Egyptian one, and even there you'd have different measurements in Upper or Lower Egypt, or during Middle and New kingdom... In post-industrial world, non-standardized measurements WILL lead to accidents. Like Gimli Glider. Or Mars Climate Orbiter, 125 million $ down the drain!

  13.  @icarian553  moving hockey to summer makes no sense, since winter Olympics lack team-based non-racing sports. Stuff like football, volleyball, basketball, handball, water polo etc. are all in summer and removing hockey will leave winter with mostly just variants of skiing, ice skating and curling.

Right below it is Sardinia and the big Island at the tip of Italy's shoe is the famous mafia land, Sicily. The group of Islands to the left are Balearic, larger one is Majorca, and smaller is Minorca, third I forgor. The two Islands on the right side are famous from classical Greece, one closer to Turkey is the one they fight about, Cyprus. Independent state. The other, closer to Greece and part of it, is Crete, the one with the Minotaur and Icarus. This leaves Malta as the dot below Sicily! TBH I probably learned most of the Mediterranean more form computer strategy games which always have it.

Also, the way I memorized Central Europe is reminding myself that it's Czecho-Slovakia and Austro-Hungary below it. Left to right. Watch THE BRIDGE (it's a great detective series) to remember Sweden borders Denmark across... a bridge. Balkans would be hard but it's microstates (except Malta) that I can't pinpoint. Kudos on hitting Romania I live near it and still can't with how it's squeezed in the middle. Edit: but finding it has NEXT button lets you wait to get outlines for the tiny countries so it's possible to 100%

Nah, this is the case where they're kinda right, during height of British Empire, most of the world spoke FRENCH as international language, and countries with good English, i.e. Sweden or Netherlands, were never colonized by British, and learned English from pop culture, which is a mix of US, UK, Aussie and other Anglophone TV, music etc.

If the map covered further East, you'd add Georgia and Armenia too, plus in the Mediterranean you'd have more countries where their own Orthodox churches are majority Christians but Christianity isn't the majority religion.

  42.  @rsl08  Europe is pretty tiny, Ukraine is the biggest country wholly in Europe, and only two countries nearby are bigger than it but are located mostly in Asia. So UK looks pretty huge next to European mainland, but Japan looks small next to Asia, which is HUGE.

  46. Well, half of Europe got independence around end of WW1, the end of empires. They half were occupied back very soon and got really independent by 1989-91, but this doesn't magically make churches in Kyiv younger than moscow.

Do we still use it? Hell no! And the amount of amendments in US constitution is ABYSMALLY low. They had to amend SLAVERY, a thing that was officially banned in Europe for centuries!
