  1. My god... you've basically summarized all my thoughts on this issue in this video. Excellent work! It's a super hard problem to solve. ESG is certainly noble, but the purpose of investing is to get a return, not to donate to a good cause. Increasing the WACC from an activist standpoint in "sin" companies (I'm thinking not just pub co.'s, but early stage venture-backed companies as well), sounds noble, but capital markets functions just like any other free market. All capital markets providers would have to agree to make this possible, and that just isn't happening (as you said with your example of hedge funds). For ESG to make sense, the economics of the respective industries have to make sense barring governments regulating the "sin" industries to make them make less economic sense.
