We all know neutrality was on offer until just before the last Russian invasion. Russia rejected Ukrainian neutrality. Soft underbelly? Nonsense. Russia is a big country with a big army and nuclear weapons. Russia has no security problems. Russia is a security problem for everyone around it. Nobody wants to invade Russia.   15.  @LearnWithVikram7  We are members of nato. If Russia attacks a nato country it is not just what that country can achieve for itself, it is what the alliance can achieve for all the members. There is nothing wrong with having allies. I can recommend it. If Ukraine can get allies for defending its independence then that is their good right. If Ukraine really wants to sacrifice territory for peace then nobody is going to stop them but at the moment even when they are prepared to do so it would be useless. Russia would only see it as a sign of weakness and press for more later. For war you only need one side, for peace you need both sides. Even if you give up things like reparations and punishment of war crimes t is still impossible to make peace with Russia because they don’t want peace.

They chose to build an army that made this possible and they chose their allies. Ukraine can chose to capitulate. Johnson and Biden can not stop that, the only thing they can do is to promise and give help. The idea that Boris Johnson forbade Ukraine to negotiate is moronic. It is a typical Russian propaganda lie that has nothing to do with reality. Ukraine decided what it wants to do which is of course based on what it can do but they decided to fight before the extend of western support was clear. What that equilibrium of power. The US is still a world power but Russia is a regional power with an army that is far too big for its small economy. The west can keep supporting Ukraine like forever or as long as they are prepared to fight for their freedom and independence. Basically Russia is not a peer. For America it is a distraction from their obsession with China and they can not give up because that will give China the wrong impression. And Russia is all but a vassal of China. Russia is just a source of war and destruction. It needs to be contained and where better than in Ukraine? You can quote any lie from Russian propaganda you like but in the end the nature of your regime tells me enough. KGB, Russian Mir, fascism.

That is why he is in power for decades now. And why should Ukraine allow Russian observers from the same nation that invaded Ukraine and occupied Ukrainian lands? And what have Russian observers schooled only in fake elections to add to any election? Ukrainian elections are real elections. The sitting president can actually lose them which is a good sign. You can have your leader for life with his personality cult. Everyone with a bit of brains knows what that means but don't try to explain to others what democracy is because you have no idea.

This is one of the answers. In the early nineties the majority of Crimeans voted for Ukrainian independence and in 2014 97% voted for Russian occupation? What dictators and their serfs never understand is that such a number is simply not believable. It proves Putin's control, not his popularity.

It starts with selecting the candidates, monopolising the media and stuffing ballot boxes. Putin gets the results he wanted. In Kherson armed soldiers went house to house to force people to vote.

Maybe historical borders at the Elbe river? Natural borders at the Atlantic ocean? With the UK and Ireland because of “security” concerns? The number of casualties, even civilian casualties, is not enough evidence. It is just collateral damage. Unacceptable amount of collateral damage maybe. You need to prove intent and that is more difficult Usually genocide is supported by genocidal rhetoric and systematic executions. Things like that. They will always look at the other side of the border and see it as theirs and a threat and if someone dares to stand their ground they see it as aggression. They begged for it and jumped through all kinds of hoops to get in. Estonian gave up claims on land stolen by Russia during the soviet occupation. Poland used the Polish American voters in the US as leverage. They wanted in because they knew what Russia was and could be.

In many ways it is a continuation of the Soviet Union led by the worst elements of that state, the KGB. And yes that organization changed names too. And now they are fascist in stead of communist but they are the same torturers and murderers. Things change continually but for the purpose of countries around it there is continuity as well. You can not just say they are different. For this context it is just the same entity evolving somewhat.
