So over the past year I've built up a lot of experience trying to nap or at least rest in all kinds of places (as a treatment for chronic fatigue) and I would be all over their nap rooms but the giraffe nap - only if the other options were taken 😅. I usually bring ear plugs and/or earbuds for white noise but it's very thoughtful of the café to provide it! Oh, and my tip for anyone needing some quick rest would be - do take some deep breaths at the start and don't get hung up on actually falling asleep. Rest is still rest!

great fun seeing you have a natural conversation where everyone speaks their native language adn understands the other! and the snacks were good and interesting too :)

No toilet for most of the time? Not suitable for living in. At least in underdeveloped countries without proper plumbing you get to do your business outside 24/7!

Glad to see that Yohei and his life are every bit as wholesome as you'd hope! Also really impressed by his English accent while singing :)

I hope those train guys got onto a train and then took one back there, with a nice hike in between. That would be an awesome day!

I really enjoyed sleeping on my balcony one warm night (no tent, just bug spray!)
7
I would totally do this! I hope it will be somewhat quiet when I do :)
5
Ah, that explains why she didn't mention here how she still made it out alive... Looking forward to it!
5
those are nice shelves! but YOU HAVE A MIFFY MUG! so do I!
5
Thank you Sherry! Do you generally feel safe on the streets at night in other parts of Tokyo?
4
Norm: I've only slept 3 hours in the past 2 nights and I'm fine! KiKi: we have colds because we haven't slept enough. Aww... I hope all of you have slept plenty since! Also: yay Emma's mum!
3
Don't worry, it's an outside window covered by a lot of Stuff!
2
Third? Nice to get a very up-to-date video!
2
Were you still there for the caves? I don't think I saw you there in either video!
2
OMG, this is so beautiful!

My heart breaks a little for all those people who barely get by. I've been okay financially because of a steady job in the Netherlands, a partner with a better paying job and the fact that we got lucky on the house market. Oh, and we didn't want kids so we don't need to afford them - and that's extra fortunate because I have chronic fatigue. I still plan to revisit Japan in the coming years but it will take extra energy to plan it out!
2
Very glad to see this addressed! I couldn't continue watching before I did. It's a sad thought that mainstream Japanese culture does seem to have steamrolled over a number of indigenous cultures relatively recently. But like Norm, I was also really blown away by how recently much of Japan was actually annexed, and how the Japanese speaking area was actually a lot smaller relatively recently!
2
It was freaky!
2
Beautiful! Thank you!
2
Lovely! Part slice of life (see what I did there?), part tourist recommendation, part cultural insight. 👌
2
I always avoid APA because the owner is apparently a rather nasty racist! So that's my two cents. Also, my boyfriend just remarked that you look a little like Ryan Reynolds, so here's a feather in your hat! ;)
2
My tip: see if any of the regional rail passes (like the JR East pass) might be worthwhile for you - apparently they haven't had the same price hike. I used it for a great trip up and down Tohoku from Tokyo a few years ago!
2
OF COURSE it was you, Norm!
2
I bet the Pinhoti trail looks amazing in autumn!
2
Do watch Sharla's latest video, though - Norm actually DID play the the resident artist's shamisen in the restaurant! Although I bet it sounds different :)
2
I would buy that apple juice that wasn't too sweet, and some yakitori and hot potato and maybe some miso paste and seaweed to take home to Europe!
1
Wow!
1
TINY shopping basket! She probably couldn't resist the kiddy version 😁
1
Sounds good! But more importantly: you need to start exploring the area where you live by eating there too! How did you ever put down roots where you lived before without eating there?
1
That first outro was the cutest thing ever :). Otherwise: another fascinating video! And how come cat lady knew you from TV? Was it the yahoo thing?
1
@TokyoLens Ah, that makes sense! So cool that she recognised you doing something completely different and wearing a facemask :)
1
First off: where is that West-Tokyo video you mentioned? About seasons: I like late spring / early summer best in the Netherlands, so I guess I'd like spring and autumn best in Japan, in terms of weather?
1
Definitely too soon to travel out of the Netherlands to Japan... But you're right, both me, all my loved ones and all my students have adapted and survived! Yay!
1
Being a salaryman or, even worse, an office lady would be my nightmare, but I really love Japan as a holiday destination and can't wait to go back to the mountains, the backstreets, the restaurants and the onsen :)
1
I can't believe the view from your suite! And what are the odds that out of all the places in Australia, you end up going to Emma's hometown first! It was really fun to see Emma do a cameo too :).
1
Snow festival! And the Sapporo beer. Good stuff :)
1
AHH now I get how it's possible for you to live in so big an apartment 😅. leaving Tokyo after all this time, big change! I'm super excited for you! have fun and good luck!
1
Poor Norm!
1
I definitely would! Especially if there are monkeys to see... (Can't believe it! Wild monkeys right near Tokyo!)
1
Chills...
1
Argh, so so sorry about your injuries! I hope they heal up beyond expectation so you can, in fact, get your pilot's license and maybe even play the shamisen again. If you basically need to keep that finger in one position while playing, wouldn't it be an option to wear some kind of hand/finger-guard to make sure your bone can't snap again? (also: wow, whoever supervised that junior doctor was really doing a bad job that night - if you work someone to the point where they forget to do something as basic as cleaning the wound, they should not have been working anymore, they should have been on a break.)
1
3:20 Norm what? You can't squeeze Nakamura into one kanji, can you?
1
This is so cool and I hope more people will move back to the inaka from the cities - if I understand it correctly, they can make a good life there without being a completely overworked salaryman/ office lady!
1
ah Norm, this is so you! gamification, a good heart, and a lot of focus. applause!
1
Beautiful and fascinating! I also loved the notes describing the speakers :)
1
Wait. Not only is the flight simulator in this room off limits except for a little while if you pay extra, but also its lights are on all the time and there's no curtain to cover it? I hope the end of this video will prove me wrong, because this sounds like a very bad plan!
1
Lol!
1
Wow, this is so epic! I love trains and I love tunnels and I love abandoned places, and this is just magical. I'd go here with a friend but I'd take the train there! Too bad there's no way my fiancé will volunteer to walk those 492 steps...
1
I can't believe it got stolen in Japan! And did you need those cash euros in Italy? I would not have expected to...
1
Beautiful, all of it! And thanks for the left over right tip -- just this morning I was putting in a robe and thought, if this were a yukata I'd have to Google which half faces out; I remember last time I wore one in Japan I didn't and then I found out afterwards that I'd done it all wrong!
