Now that's a proper train running at proper speeds! I realize that the US needs more high speed rail for real effectiveness, but this was a decent start, from my European perspective 😁. Looking forward to the series! Very impressed that you'll travel all the way over to Alaska by rail!

This thumbnail is so funny given how often you've travelled with her even on YouTube! But may it bring in many new viewers, and I'm looking forward to watching!

Wow, so much mayhem on day one! I just finished watching Kara and Nate cycle across the US in 36 days, and while their bike broke down a lot too, their back wheel only stopped spinning on day 30 or so... Either they got really lucky or adding just one more rider really increases the technical risks exponentially! I hope things got better for the race after day one...
28
great fun seeing you have a natural conversation where everyone speaks their native language adn understands the other! and the snacks were good and interesting too :)
21
Pity about the bedbugs! I did wonder why you didn't go for a hostel instead of a hotel if it had to be cheap, but I guess that wasn't the challenge you had set yourself? Also, if I ever make it to Vancouver I think Chinese food will be at the top of my list :)
19
Interesting how the ferry and the surrounding area look like something out of the Netherlands, and then a short drive further on you have mountains and big green rainforests and waterfalls! 💚
18
That's articulatory detail that I would have found very difficult to pick up on on my own! And as a linguist, I also really dig the use of terms like alveolar ridge and affricate on YouTube :)
17
This brings back memories. First of my first trip to Scotland when I was twelve in 1992, and then, when I started wondering why I also had memories of eating scallops at a restaurant on the water in Fort William, and and a huge supermarket, of my second time, around 2005. Beautiful country! I'm really looking forward to your Caledonian Sleeper video and I hope everything worked when you were on it! (it doesn't always, apparently)
16
6:35 aha! I was surprised that it didn't seem like they'd built in a time buffer, earlier. This makes a lot more sense :)
16
What a wonderful trip! Its always a joy to see Will, and it's great to see Austyn thriving again after his head injury!
16
Oh man, I want to be on this train so bad! (Sidebar, as a European train enthusiast's daughter, I can't imagine first boarding a train at 17!) Also, railway staff waving you off - it's like something straight out of Japan!
10
That does seem like a great airport hotel! And I was relieved to see you get a lot of fresh air while staying there too. Being cooped up for 24 hours wouldn't have been so fun!
9
I hope those train guys got onto a train and then took one back there, with a nice hike in between. That would be an awesome day!

I've heard great things about the local food scene and the boreal rain forest, but now I just want to visit Vancouver for the colourful houses and the coffee! I legit teared up a little at the sight of those coffee shops - I've improved my home coffee a lot but I really miss getting a latte from a proper barista at a nice place!
8
This was beautiful! And I was surprised to see those Belgian beers on the boat. Takes me back to some traditional Belgian café experiences :)
5
So cool! Normally I hold off on watching your videos until after dinner here in the Netherlands, but now it was the perfect thing to take my mind off my horrible cold as my partner cooks 🙂
5
7:45 "how does my hair look?" better than Michael's without the cap, man ;)
5
those are nice shelves! but YOU HAVE A MIFFY MUG! so do I!
5
I love seeing how everything works behind the scenes! thanks!

YES more tugboat content! Super interesting what a day is actually like. Essentially waiting for 7-9 hours while you tug a log boom upstream... That would really tax my patience (I would also not do well on a river transport ship in Europe)! I'm also fascinated by the word log boom. I looked it up and boom was borrowed from the Dutch word boom 'tree' (pronounced 'bome') so log boom almost sounds like 'tree tree' to me! But boom has obviously picked up some more specific meanings in English :)

Oh man, Canada just keeps on getting more incredible! Wow. PEI must really be quite something if you were so excited for it!
4
1:25 did you arrive in Dublin in the middle of the night? Because normally there is a very reasonably priced bus! (I feel like an expert because I've visited the city and the country exactly once and I took that bus, lol!)
4
That amazing! But 5 hours in a tunnel on one day would be a bit much for me 😅
3
Super realistic though! I remember when I was headed to an island in the Caribbean for the first time (I'm from Europe) and the plane doors opened during a stopover in the Caribbean... I didn't know what hit me and a steamed up bathroom was literally the only experience I could compare it to 😅
3
Norm: I've only slept 3 hours in the past 2 nights and I'm fine! KiKi: we have colds because we haven't slept enough. Aww... I hope all of you have slept plenty since! Also: yay Emma's mum!
3
Funny... That Saturday I travelled to Germany and back from the Netherlands by train and it was unusually slow because so many trains had been diverted to Zandvoort! I did manage to stay dry though 😅
3
A steam train running on oil? I didn't know that was a thing! Thanks for all the technical details, this was so interesting!
3
Third? Nice to get a very up-to-date video!
2
Don't know if the food is also included in the business class price, but if it is, I'd go for that!
2
Heyy, this is where I saw my real-life narrowboats! In the Gas Street Basin! They all looked so charming, even if visiting Birmingham over land was definitely also worth it 😊
2
I went there and wondered about the post box too! What a lovely place and what a lovely video. I hope Sasahara-san stays active after retirement!
2
Yes to gyoza as a main dish! With some pickles maybe - I don't even need rice!
2
And let us know you're coming to the Netherlands in advance for a meetup!
2
Fascinating! I remember reading about this practice in a romance novel from the 1980s, of all places, and it's so cool to finally see it!
2
This was amazing!
2
Oof, that was a hard day! It was so dry for so long this summer, it makes sense that the levels would have lowered so much (and maybe even more later on?). Glad you made it through! And that initial lock complex was fascinating. Looking forward to the final video! And seriously considering doing some narrow boating myself sometime.
2
Glad to hear it was not just you buying the condo alone! I got a bit worried when you kept saying 'I bought a condo' at first :)
2
I think this is going to be an amazing series! And I'm really glad that you'll still have biweekly videos for us :)
2
What a fun and interesting day! 😍
2
OF COURSE it was you, Norm!
2
Man, these videos just keep getting better and better! I'm kind of glad now that I've saved them up by accident, so I get to binge them!
2
What a cool tour! I can kind of identify with Lawrence's enthusiasm about lifers even if I'm not a hardcore birder. Every time I see a bird I've never seen before in my garden, I get really excited! And the starry night and the moon really impressed me too. I know there's a dark-sky park in the far north of my densely populated country, I should try to stay the night there when there's a good chance of clear skies!
2
I'm normally only into full-size trains, but this is so cool!
2
that view of the Grand Canyon... Wow! I got chills just seeing it on my TV, them teared up a little seeing Will taking it in - and that's before he turned out to be tearing up! what a perfect bucket list trip.
2
This was great! I was happy to see Texarkana station but sad to hear it's condemned. What a waste!
2
thanks for this wonderful series, guys! and aha, Mike, canal boat travels , that's what you were doing in the UK! I always find them a fascinating and charming blast from the past. can't wait!
1
What really got to me is the hand-written signs. 💛
1
That first outro was the cutest thing ever :). Otherwise: another fascinating video! And how come cat lady knew you from TV? Was it the yahoo thing?
1
I drink tea all day most days, and since Covid it's all been fukamushi sencha (which I discovered more or less by accident in a Sendai tea shop with the help of rather imperfect Google translations). I love it so much! But when I need a pick me up, I'll make myself a caffe latte. Only one per day though :)
1
First off: where is that West-Tokyo video you mentioned? About seasons: I like late spring / early summer best in the Netherlands, so I guess I'd like spring and autumn best in Japan, in terms of weather?
1
Being a salaryman or, even worse, an office lady would be my nightmare, but I really love Japan as a holiday destination and can't wait to go back to the mountains, the backstreets, the restaurants and the onsen :)
1
Oh man, I want to try almost all of those foods now!
1
I could almost smell the potato fields! Having grown up around flat potato fields near the sea I wasn't as blown away by this episode as the previous one, but again, a lovely part of the world to discover, and I'd love to help make and eat a bannock like that sometime!
1
What a beautiful region! I'm looking forward to the rest of the trip :)
1
I can't believe the view from your suite! And what are the odds that out of all the places in Australia, you end up going to Emma's hometown first! It was really fun to see Emma do a cameo too :).
1
Wow! I have to say, thank you for showing us what it's like so we don't have to go there 😅 The biggest disconnect I've seen since staying in a German holiday village in the desert on Fuerteventura in the Canaries... (It was a bit of a surprise last-minute package deal a long time ago!) I literally breathed a sigh of relief when you when outside of the European hotels and showed us a bit of the actual city! But the luxury and the food looked good!
1
It was nice to see you glowing and beaming so much! It looked more enjoyable than when you were confronted with questionable lodgings last year 😁
1
Chills...
1
I wonder if that Belgian bakery also has actual Belgian bread! That bread is sooo good... But I also enjoyed seeing the novelty waffle with Greek flavours - and the Belgian beer bar with German and Czech beer :)
1
What an absolute joy!
1
It is SO BEAUTIFUL out there. I love these videos! And the engineering on that lock cascade was brilliant!
1
What a joy this video is!
1
I second this offer!
1
I think the slugs were my favourite. And I found it funny that I know one other person with the artist's last name, and now I imagine the artist as someone who's as bright and bonkers as the guy I know :)
1
this was fun but I REALLY want to travel back in time to check the thickness of your socks and to give you blister plasters and sports tape before you left! poor feet!
1
Haha! This is great. Put a huge smile on my face 😄
1
I envy you your name!
1
What a fascinating story!
1
Wow! Just wow. Was the bucket there 15 years ago?
1
OMG... This was amazing!
1
OMG this looks like an amazing route! I would LOVE to do this trip one day (minus Covid and the breakdown ahead)
1
I wanna goooooo! Also need to look up what the numbers 1 and 2 are 😅. And I can't believe you were insecure about pronouncing Finse (it has two syllables, if that helps) but effortlessly pronounced Myrdal! 😆
1
Not everyone agrees on the definition of the word plus: unlike some other parts of Canada, British Columbia (that's where Vancouver is, right?) hasn't even, strictly speaking, ordered its residents to stay at home (or that's what Wikipedia says, anyway). Having said that, this is somewhat similar to the situation here in the Netherlands, and the social distancing measures certainly feel serious enough to merit a dramatic name...
1
I used to envy people who lived near a forest; now I live in a forested area and I envy people who live near rocks and rivers, lol! But you're so right, exploring one's local area is so worth it! This week I went on a cycle ride out of the forest and into the polders around the old Dutch fishing town of Spakenburg. I saw amazing new views both in the forest and in the open country, I had fried fish for lunch and I even saw an old lady in traditional dress! Highly recommended for anyone in the area :)
1
That was a very nice video and if I wanted to start something new I would 100% feel encouraged. But I also want to share these more random thoughts: Ooh, you made it into a forested area! Very good! And your hair actually looks good now (and not just compared to the hat hair you sported in the Squamish video). And finally: that's not how I expected your friend's name to be spelled, but it would work a lot better for English speakers than the Dutch and German spellings I was thinking about (Ties, This, Thies...)
1
Oh. My god. This place looks amazing and you get to touch everything in the caboose and you get those to-die-for pancakes! So jealous!
1
What a nice place. I'll imagine it with green summer foliage all around, for even more sheltered outdoor showering :)
1
Love it!
1
Lovely! Especially since you get some original NZ landscape as well
