Fun facts. The Russians were not ahead of the US. They shelved Von Braun's rocket to prevent his successful launch. This was for many reasons. Some poliitcal and some legal. Firstly, they wanted the Russians to establish international law on legality of overflights from space. The US had plans for dozens of manned spy satellites and feared the Russians would claim air space extended to space. This is why they were testing high altitude recoveries in NM. What the US government failed to anticipate was the public backlash of allowing Russia first access to space and the psychological affect it would have on the American people. After endless failures by the USAF, they took Von Braun's rocket out of mothballs, he grabbed the sat from the trunk of his car, and they launched it into orbit without issue. This rocket was ready and prepared to go some 9-18 months BEFORE Sputnik.
