It was because post world war, USA was the only country which came out of the war better than any other country mostly because of its isolation geographically. United States holding the largest reserves of gold at that moment made the dollar the reserve currency of the world not its gdp.

India is poorer than the west because its socio economic measures like literacy rates, its median disposable income, HDI etc. Is lower than the western countries. The same reason Swiss are considered to be amongst the richest citizens in the world compared to even the United States hence Swiss franc being the currency which is not affected my global crisis.
