@soviet union The thing with the 2 party system is that it's best to see it as a coalition system as that's how it works in effect. It's not that different from Europe, but what it does allow that Europe doesn't is the impact of charisma in political figures as in Europe you vote strictly for the party and not the candidate. The candidates have no actual wills of their own besides the party. Those smaller parties then form coalitions with others to become the ruling coalition. In the US, the platforms are created deliberately vague to facilitate as many people as possible under their tents, and we hold primaries by the party voters to decide in what policies/people we want at any given time. The republican party of California is not like the republican party of Ohio and is not like the republican party of Florida. Replace republican with Democrat and the sentence still holds true.
