I don't think it really is. In some capacity they're are examples of society responding to the traumas of what they experienced, but even with the Native Americans much of that was caused by simply having no cultural controls on the new western developments and lifestyles. It's also the fact that depression is a phenomenon primarily driven by the middle to late 20th century. Where as before you were raised to have enough hardship to grow accustomed and adapt accordingly, much of the west simply hasn't from that period. I think the lens of depression may be from the extreme potency which it has since manifested in modern society.

@kokofan50 There are very obvious connections with regards to cause and effect that are entirely dependant on how much you can see to entirely understand that. However, the problem is that we're talking about humans and not the world. However logical the world is based on how the systems work, the human mind (the concept being discussed) is inherently illogical.
