@matthiuskoenig3378 Not just the native plebs but also local nobles who didn't want to deal with the requirements of the Roman state

@John Gilligan Yeah it is the answer. "Fair and respectful in foreign affairs" doesn't apply when others aren't playing fair. Not to mention it doesn't at all take into account geopolitics which is markedly more complicated than just milquetoast "diplomacy". Diplomacy requires you being able to back your words with force. We keep ourselves safe at home by dealing with the problems abroad. But when you fuck it up then Yeah no-one is really eager.

3:43 I think the most important thing here is that if you pass the physical requirements, then you've demonstrated that it isn't a problem. Could definitely have less issue.

@Hendrik van Leeuwen Actually, it's an amazing thing. In fact, they actually have lower attrition rates because the life experience knocks more sense into them. It's almost always been a physical concern as well as a time factor as they ideally want men who are in for decades. Also worth noting that the current structure has a fair few situations with 30 year old men being ordered by mid to late 20s new officers out of the officers college.
