  3. Extreme politics? I think you're missing something if you think that's the result. For example, in the 60s, the parties were so close politically that there were calls for diversity. The reason for the polarization we're seeing is multifaceted but has more to do with the cultural changes of the internet, the pill (much weaker but still the), mass college education, secularization, urbanization, and deinundustrialization. These all have extreme changes on the economy and culture that cause a lot of issues. When you realize the parties are themselves coalitions, this view of them being extreme falls apart.

  4. I think there's something to be said about even big trade partners going to war, for example, how it's never actually worked. Such as with WW1 Germany and Britain being the largest trade partners, but fighting regardless.
