Seeing what goes into this I'm a lot more hopeful about this rifle than I am the Spear even though I know it probably won't win. This rifle seems like a genuine game changer with the ability to just switch to a rather controllable automatic fire

Well the last century was irons and the limiting factor of 300m was you know... human vision. The designated marksmen and snipers were all made to take out people at longer distances. They did this by having magnified optics. Now what are they giving every soldier who fields one of these weapons? A magnified optic which can automatically do any calculations and thus hit targets far farther out. Issue isn't things like foliage and never has been. Simply human vision.

Richard Mangus Recoilless guns are a type of artillery and much more accurate than saying "recoilless rifle," their more colloquial name. Recoilless guns work much like bazookas with pushing gasses out the back to cancel out recoil at the cost of reduced range in exchange for reduced weight due to not having a heavy recoil system.

And in fact the ottomans were an invading force which eventually made Anatolia their home and saw themselves as the successors to the Roman state (the original name was the "Rûm"), who at that point had already conquered through Iran and took up cultural characteristics. Also look up the Seljuks. Turkic history is quite long and in real terms some of the only ones to admit they're foreigners who made a new home where they currently are. Btw Xinjiang is "East Turkistan" where they're primarily Turkic peoples

@Richard Mangus A recoilless gun, also colloquially called a recoilless rifle, is a type of artillery that works much like a bazooka with a shell and waste gasses propelled out of the rear of the barrel. In exchange for the reduction in range and velocity, you do not have to have a recoil system built into the platform meaning you can make them far lighter than traditional artillery systems. 😊

@Lyn oluoch They're largely not. It's been more due to a failure of doctrine and execution rather than an issue of the platform. Mobile protected firepower is always useful and the IFV concept isn't meant to take on any kind of Anti-tank munitions. They've always been vulnerable. But also light infantry has been very useful in a defensive role

@theofficialken1755 Yeah I wouldn't trust what they put out (just because I wouldn't trust what any government puts out as reliable figures), but it's definitely interesting to see the government saying they're trying to go after artillery. Though it'd lend credence to my idea that they're not actually outgunned. The qualitative advantage in "shoot and scoot" seems to be working out for them

The thing here is that the ammo is specialized to work in a certain weapon. The point the army is trying to go for is getting a system which complements each other naturally such as allowing a barrel to be 20 inches but still being under a certain length so you have a bullpup and then the true velocity ammo only has to get to a certain level. Sig made the gun a carbine and then made the ammo for it afterward because it was the only way to get 3000fps from a 13" barrel. Is it even possible for the textron ammo to work in a platform which isn't that weapon? That's the thing at hand here and why the army decided the caliber and told them to go wild.

Turkiye is funny because their foreign policy is rather segmented as they ask "Why can't we cooperate with Russia?" while at the same time having a jet engine program with Ukraine prior to the outbreak of war, and telling the Russians in no uncertain terms "Give Ukraine all of its territory back" as it continues to make ships for Ukraine and send it other aid as well. I think the only supporters of Ukraine more vocal than Turkiye are Poland and the Baltic.

@damienharbin242 I'm going to be honest, the Spear is a weapon for the Russians in that it's easy to repair, having specific fallback points, and nothing really big changing. It can take probably more punishment even in addition to the extra punishment it's taking from its own ammo. This is in comparison to the bullpup (I can't remember its name lol) which is meant to have a new system which increases soldier abilities in combat. MG 6.8 is better than no MG though and that was a mistake on their part.

I'm pretty sure the MG-42 is still considered the best GPMG short of its barrel swap system but maybe I'm just catching enough of the conversation

@sleepyjoe4529 For all intents and purposes, it'd be about the same. If anything, the Americans might be more motivated as they're much more militaristic in comparison. Remember, the example he gave was of the Brits fighting 10,000 miles away against the Argentina going for islands they claim. So if we're making any comparisons the Americans have the advantage with the better military.

@cm-pr2ys Yeah I think that's the only pair that's compatible and what we're going to get because they know that TV is an easy upgrade and an improvement in logistics, but the Spear is clearly the superior weapon. Though I've a soft spot for the textron bid as I've learned more about it.

I think another key factor as to the punishment for declarations of war is the required mobilization of your own population and the stigma of the world Wars making nearly all war total wars in people's eyes. There's a lot of things which go into declarations of war on the home front as well, such as rationing, government actions to fund the war effort, industrial mobilization by forcing people into the factories, etc. Such things are now associated with the war effort and have made it difficult. These have mostly risen due to the large industrial wars and are better avoided if not declared at all. Another example of the difficulty is in the USA with congressional approval required for declarations of war and I think Russia needing to declare war to use conscripts outside of its borders where it initially didn't want to use them at all.

@Gus Gone Honestly battery technology needs a major revolution in terms of capacity before they can really be used for anything super significant. However, once they get there, you do have some significant options. Also I'm a fan of the whole bicycle infantry concept. WW2 hadn't yet created mountain bikes which is why they failed but we have those now so they'd probably work. Also do very much want to have some holes picked in the idea of adding a small gasoline motor to those bicycles and making them like early motorcycles where you can turn it on and go fast if needed but if not use them on the March. I know some militias in south Asia have been known to use bicycles as well though.

@mecampbell30 Polymer ends up as a better heat sink as demonstrated by the stone cold chambers after the True Velocity ammo is fired. Polymer is also cheaper than metal in every capacity so it wouldn't take long for the new facility to start up and then pay for itself in the long run. I actually agree with Chris here and say it was probably the lack of a belt-fed option and Sig playing politics saying "Machine gun only comes with our rifle" since everything about the GD bid seems to have been better except the suppressor looking a tad silly and you absolutely know they would've taken both if they could've when we know asanine the army is about recoil and hit percentage via follow up shots on target which is how the 3rd burst came into being in the first place and is facilitated by lighter ammo allowing soldiers to carry more.

I'm not even sure it's that. It's just the war they've found themselves in. They have prepared for decades about a mobile conflict on open ground but what they've found themselves in is an urban conflict constricted to roads. And you can see that the whole issue they're seeing is that they've got unsupported tanks in city streets and forested roads where they're sitting ducks. Issue is use.

The reasons really boil down to two: the society and institutions are unable to inspire really anything positive in the youth, and even of those that can apply are too unhealthy to even join. And frankly I agree with the diagnosis that it's a canary in the coal mine. The society is not exactly in a healthy state. And in the mean time we'll see real physical damage until it can be righted.

I know the army says that it won't mix and match ammo and weapon, but true velocity seems like a better match for Sig Sauer than general dynamics. Textron CAN'T have that mix and Sig seems to have weapons that are more suited to keeping in line with current army service. They also have a heavy machine gun lined up to replace the 7.62 since this 6.8 is replacing 5.56 not 7.62. With the benefits of the true velocity composite ammo, it is vastly superior to the bi-metal cartridge with none of the downsides of the CT rounds, I can't see them NOT adopting them. The Sig weapons seem way too suited to the current army doctrine of weapons for them to reject either. So overall it seems like Sig will get weapons and True velocity will get a huge ammo contract for probably the rest of all military ammo.

I think it's less that it was because of being unable to in Afghanistan and more of testing the waters to see if that was at all possible to do with making everyone a designated marksman. And well with these new scopes that can do exactly that, it seems kind of a no-brainer to do so. Also historically Assault squads have wielded different weapons to actually engage in CQC like this so I see the M4 being put exactly in that role again if that needs to be done. Assault rifles basically allowed militaries to do away with the submachine gun because the Assault rifle could handle that role as well. Seems like exactly where all of that extra stocks of munitions would go. More than anything else it seems like this would've best been fit by the general dynamics bid mentioned earlier with the only possible issue being over-penetration due to the way that rifle is designed. However due to a lack of belt-fed option, no dice and it was shelved.

@Mmjk_12 They don't do the job better. They're adjuncts. Missiles are missiles. You still need aircraft for patrol, and fundamentally they're better at tracking and killing naval vessels better than other naval vessels are. Drones are fundamentally more attritable versions of capabilities we already have.

That's not quite what it is. It's very simple: the stated budget just isn't what people think it is. People think the budget is equipment. That's wrong. It's things like food, soldier pay, and medical care. This means that the actual defense budget going towards the true "defense" is less than expected. The government procurement function in the US is what causes the problems we see, not the companies themselves.

Frankly I imagine the US is depleting the artillery stockpiles, but I'm going to leverage a guess and say that the US is making the decision that it probably won't need them given that they're shifting to the pacific theater. Those small islands aren't exactly prime howitzer fighting given that they're often less than 50 miles across. Fighting is going to be done by the navy in large sea areas or in coastal areas with likely a very limited set in simply preventing China from breaking out of the first island chain. Those howitzers are for fighting the Russians and so might as well let them do it.

First off: caseless worked and was going to be adopted, but got thwarted by German reunification. Second off: we've had an incredible increase in availability, cost effectiveness, and ability of polymer materials. Thus, as an effective material, it isn't an issue. In fact I believe you can purchase straight from the true velocity website.

I think the Textron bid is best in isolation, the ammo weight savings and the way it deals with the casings is very interesting. General dynamics seems like it won't win based on rifle alone but it's worth seeing how polymer ammo will deal with heat. The Sig bid is probably the best from a logistical standpoint. The only real difference in production will be the type for making any new cartridge and they even have similarly the casings already for it from the 7.62 cartridges as it's a ×51mm cartridge and so much like the 5.7×28mm it's a fairly simple switch for the cartridges.

5:38 It's less about the Americans not agreeing, but instead having learned from the F-4 Phantom (a fighter with no cannons), that a backup cannon is pretty necessary and so the cannons currently had are backup weapons in case everything else fails. Kind of like the pistols.

Well the goal here seems to be very specific: hitting the enemy and taking them out of the fight from a much farther range. The reason for this is that the fire control systems will allow them to do so beyond the 300m range in which most fights took place. That's the point of this whole program in the first place

@RWebster325 The rifle is supposed to be for the average soldier. Great that you're better. But uh... if you've kept up at all with this whole thing, the average soldier is supposed to have this in a few decades as that was the intention of the program with this first bit being limited adoption within the newly created "Close Combat Force" which isn't even all of the combat forces of the US military. It's given first to the highest tier operators and then down further down the line.

Well there are a fair few polymers that are more heat resistant and the most important part to its to keep high heat resistance for a fraction of a second. As long a it clears that, it should be fine.

@fatgrubman645 They may be deepening trade ties, but it's because Russia is running out of trade partners. Turkiye isn't a wealthy country and in the middle of an economic crisis, so they're not in the position to really refuse. They're basically extorting Russia in as they're in a position of weakness. Ultimately, as I said, their foreign policy is very segmented. This means that everything is on a case by case basis, not holistic. Russia has money they need to hide? They're quite happy to accept it. However, remember that Turkiye is the one that refuses to let Russia put more ships into the black sea, that they're building ships for Ukraine, that they negotiated the grain deal (a benefit for Ukraine), and that they've themselves given and sold weapons to the country, as well as having the position I said earlier of saying that even Crimea is Ukrainian. Realistically, it seems the reason Turkiye doesn't do more is that it needs to preserve diplomatic firepower to get concessions out of Russia. Which even then, serves to keep Russia from making bolder moves as they do still have things to lose. Personally, I've heard nothing of sanctions busting efforts by Turkiye, so I can't speak on that.

I agree with the idea that the people who cry for more spending on social services and the like tend to talk overlook what the US military actually brings in as benefits as they've just grown up in that environment and it's why they are in favor of things like disarmament not realizing that the US foots the bill on global security. They look at places like Costa Rica and say "Look they don't have a military!" and then completely lack the context that America literally has given Them a security guarantee and that it's effectively a modern American colony because so many Americans go there for things like retirement and pleasure. It's also really difficult to get capabilities back once you lose them. So any sort of disarmament would be basically permanent as you can't just buy back a military from scratch. It must be built over years or even decades with continued investment or capabilities simply can't be sustained. A tank factory can't be built overnight, and neither can the electronics or sensor suite, which gives you the capability to use them effectively. More relevant is this: industry cannot be turned on and off, and thus, you need to have the relevant stockpiles and surge capacity to survive until industry can finally accommodate. Without that you simply lose before you had the opportunity to really fight unless you manage massive lend lease from others who did stockpile.

For sure this is no gulf War. The US lost 3 Bradleys and about 150 men over a full month. The Russians have lost far more in roughly 4 days.

I wonder how this will be complemented in future by that new composite barrel which acts as a heat sink on the barrel proper and the True Velocity composite ammo which leaves the breech cool to the touch and allows for more ammo to be carried.

Sure it has a ridiculous amount of powder, a few things to understand: With a barrel as short as 8.5" you get the same energy from 7.62x51 as 7.62x39, but win tons of drawbacks like increase concussion, increased muzzle flash, and a whole lot more recoil (which only increases with increased powder). It's also important to understand that for the ranges with which an SBR is applicable, the 5.56 can still pierce modern body armor. The 6.8 cartridge is intended to pierce it at range where 5.56 is limited. Also you can carry more 5.56 in a magazine of the same size as you can for full power. Thus, the only thing you have from a raptor, is a very loud toy. Only maybe as effective, with more drawbacks, and only possible benefit being streamlining ammo, but you want a weapon which is designed for your CQB Assault squads regardless which 5.56 is half designed for as an intermediate cartridge.

E Don't use an 8.5 inch weapon lol. It's needlessly small and on top of that you have all of the mentioned drawbacks. You're better off using something like .300blk than trying to use a full power cartridge.

E It's worth noting that the .277 fury is designed to cause enough back deformation as to take them out through the army at that range and not necessarily break it. But 5 inches is a huge detriment especially as it shrinks as a percentage of barrel. So you've a point, but still seems like a toy when you lose so much of the velocity you have. And it's my entire point. I wonder what range that test was conducted at as well.

Seems like what the Indians really need are licensed Galil Aces lol. Fundamentally an AK but with an overall better design and manufacturing process (and the reason the AK is good in cold is because of its design) so if they used those they'd be in a decent place. Also could standardize on it since the Gail Ace comes in all Indian calibers.

They may not be a NATO army but they are not outgunned in artillery. If they were, there'd be no attack at all from what i can see. But you do have a point in the lack of air power. Let's see what happens. I'm sure they've considered this as well

I know they say they won't, but I can't see the army not sticking the TV in this rifle. Especially with what they can do with the cartridge. This is the rifle that the army wants. But TV is the ammo the army wants. It seems like the perfect pairing and TV is definitely attempting to show that they can be useful even without the weapon they're in the bid with and I absolutely believe they can get the velocity requirements from the 13" barrel with some tweaks. I imagine they can probably also pump out ammo faster being polymer than metal. And also extend the life of this rifle. And lower recoil. And basically just turn this rifle into a weapon that probably will be able to actually do it all. The issues of the rifle are primarily ammo related. TV just seems like the perfect pairing for this rifle to get everything the army wants. I really can't see them not having talks of getting the Spear into the hands of TV and asking them to see if they cab modify their 6.8 to get the required velocity out of the 13" barrel. If they can, and I believe they probably can, then it's the match made in heaven.

There were some specific requirements being mostly overall weapon length and velocity with lower ammo weight. This is just a function of sig shenanigans for trying to meet the requirements.

If this actually proliferates then this is a game changer. Information is the greatest weapon of all and that kind of ability to allow everyone to have the same information limits communication issues. If you can mark targets then what you have is an entire platoon which can engage everyone because you Only need one person to spot the enemy and then everyone can fire at them. Combine that with the NGSW and what you have is a force which can effectively kill an entire enemy force before really the unit can even be seen. Who's going to assume gunshots from 800m away are hitting them until they're losing men and have ruled out all other options or have already been in frequent contact with those engagements?

Looking at this again I think I just realized the critical mistake that Beretta made with this weapon: they basically made a room clearing weapon with battle rifle ammo. Which is fundamentally incompatible.

Historically we've seen both the brute force numbers route and small well trained and equipped route of infantry work. They both work. It's a question of what's more replaceable for you: people or equipment. If you're really big on manufacturing, then it's equipment. If you're really really bad at that... well then you're paying in blood not dollars.

I think it's going to be very interesting how this goes in future wars against the NGSW. That platform is focusing more on range and single hit probability but combined with the traditional combined arms doctrine. I really do wonder how well the US will be able to keep their distance and take advantage of their weapon. No-one wants to CQC or urban warfare if they can avoid it.

In any case... whataboutism means really nothing, and I didn't use it as a mark against the civilization or people either. It's just a matter of fact. The point in bringing it up, was that the person I was responding to was asking about the Hittite civilization, and I was saying no. It was simply to say that the Turks are largely a warrior culture and the way they got to Anatolia is reflective of that. Not to mention, I don't believe there is a population of modern humans where they are now that weren't the product of some sort of violent migration that replaced the previous population.

@nesrin demirhan As far as I know, they're today primarily Turkic with definite cultural influences of the previous ones (like I said they considered themselves the successors of the Roman empire in ottoman times), but genetically as far as I know it was primarily a population replacement.

@Asker Eh... there MAY have been a previous Turkic population in Anatolia beforehand, roughly 4000 years ago. But it was very small. The seljuks also did not go to Anatolia because of the Mongols. That may have been the reason they left central Asia, but it's not the reason they're in Anatolia. For North America and Oceania, native populations died at rates incredibly high due to disease leaving a mostly empty continent. For South Africa, that was the Dutch not the British. The British certainly had the largest empire of all time, but what does it even matter? Especially since so much of it was just Africa (a continent mostly in the Iron age and cut off from the world) and India (mostly ruled through local elites in many instances).

@mecampbell30 The breech and barrel are also cool to the touch. Everything is cool to the touch. Also realistically I imagine the reason TV ammo is higher is just volume since they're a small company and the only producer with limited quantities on the market. This is compared to the incredibly large factories which exist for a lot of ammo and the fact that prices are pushed down due to the presence of ammo made years ago still on the market.

I'll be honest I can absolutely see the army taking the true velocity ammo and sticking it in the Sig Weapon system. Mainly because the two systems CAN work together even if they weren't made for each other. They said they wouldn't mix and match but I really can't see the army doing that when it's fairly evident how much the plastic cased ammo can do in terms of truly adding an advantage, and then on top of that the Spear very much being what an evolution of the M16 platform should be. They would have all of the manual of arms of the weapons (with all of the accuracy benefits) and then all of weight and heat savings of the ammo. The only downside of the ammo is logistics of creating it, but that can be changed. And it can absolutely increase their efficiency in ways they wouldn't have otherwise. Overall I really can't see the US military in good faith not using this cartridge when it's exactly the increase they were looking for with the ability to be even better with just a push of a button. Overall it'll probably be cheaper to produce as well using plastic over metal. It will also increase service life of the firearms. But since the only way you can accommodate the ammo size is with a new firearm, the best tool for the job seems to be the Spear. Being more mechanically accurate means that it'll benefit even more from the casing. And since big army doesn't like change they probably won't go for the bullpup. On top of that the Sig bid also has a .338 heavy machine gun option in their kit despite it not being really part of the contract. So those weapons seem like they would be very attractive to a Millitary that is very resistant to change. And with the 6.8 LMG I believe being lighter than their current machine guns, they would probably be convinced to go ahead and make the change in weapons. Lighter weapons, vastly lighter ammo, improved fuel costs, increased ammo capacities on soldiers, and the ability for the average infantryman to engage to their potential fullest extent. I can't see this going any other way.

@neutronalchemist3241 To be fair, that's the current TV and I can't see them not getting their hands on the sig to get 3k out of the 13" barrel. It'll certainly take an extra bit of powder, but it'll almost certainly take less powder than the sig ammo since TV gets more velocity out of similar pressures. Thus I imagine them having basically an overpressure variant made for the Spear since I doubt the military wants more brass when they're looking to lower costs by being able to transport more ammo for less.

Worth noting that Russia has basically suffered the same problem Poland did. Russia basically turned its entire culture into having the only purpose to try to secure its borders. Poland though ended up suffering a total collapse of its population losing a third of it. And then got invaded while it was weak.

@RWebster325 Can you potentially see and hit them. Yes. But only because you know exactly the fact that they're targets and the people who engage in that stuff usually have better than average eyesight. At distances roughly around 300m it becomes difficult to properly identify targets. And even farther out you're not even aiming at a target, just an approximate position.
