Yeah the issue is that the pre-Soviet borders were defensible and especially the eastern bloc as they served as buffer states and getting into a more narrow part of the plain. However the modern Russian borders are completely indefensible and leave it incredibly vunerable.

He wants a return to pre-Soviet borders and more than anything a buffer against the west so that they stop getting invaded and suffering millions of casualties in huge wars. He also wants control of central Asia again to contain China and keep from getting invaded in there as well. But for now the west is the bigger threat to them.
