I suspect like most folks commenting here I am not someone who is enamoured of the "floating Petri dishes" as my partner and I call them. The nearest I have been to a cruise is using long ferries on the Baltic to cross from Germany (where we live) to Norway - so a 20 hour crossing with a cabin. My feeling is probably similar to my feelings about theme parks. I worked as a Youth Leader for a young group and they chose a trip to go to a theme park I had to go along and it was so weird as there was nowhere where you could get away from the sound of people enjoying themselves (and I tried hard). The other analogy I thought of was of the British holiday camp - started in the 1930s and they were mass holiday locations where you paid for bed and board and enjoyed nobbly knee competitions and beautiful baby competitions My own holidaying usually involves me going mostly to urban centres in Europe mostly by train or ferry. and learning and using some language with the locals. Even our one centre holidays - which we are taking more and more is that we organise trips out by train, tram or boat. To me cruise ships with 10 000 other people is like hell on Earth. I used to say that my vision of hell was travelling on an endless Autobahn on a coach with school children where they all wanted to go to the toilet but there were no rest stops. I might need to revise that to being trapped on a cruise ship with people who didn't want to do anything but lounge around.
