Another example of tariffs that were a big big problem were the British Corn Laws (1815 - 1846) which were only repealed in 1846 in the second year of the Irish Potato Famine as they were hindering the feeding of the Irish poor. They were aimed at bolstering the landed gentry who were dominant in the parliament at the time (full adult male suffrage didn't happen until technically the twentieth century but in 1867 the working class renters above a certain value of property got the vote) The repeal of the corn laws was actively sought by the urban bourgeoisie through the early 19th century and was part of the free trade movement.
