Barbour was the first “monetarist“ chancellor in this current period of what is called the neoliberal period. He is often overlooked as he ploughed the British economy into the ground. Thatcher who drove the manufacturing sector into the ground and caused three recessions is remembered more fondly by folks as she had a successful war and sold off the Georgian silver and used the tax revenue from North Sea oil to pay for her wealth redistribution from the poorest to the wealthiest.

@TheSpikehere I had forgotten about Iain Macleod as he was in post for a month and ill for a lot of that time. I really only remember Barbour as I was only eight when the conservatives came to power in 1970 and only started reading newspapers in 1972/3 as things started to go wrong.

@TheSpikehere My memories of 1970 are more of going to see The Merchant of Venice with Judi Dench and Polly James (from The Liver Birds on TV) It was my first Shakespeare play and I still remember the set and the acting.
