  1. When I went to Beijing for a 1 month course after studying Chinese for five years at an evening degree course in London. The Chinese were often surprised that a foreigner could speak Chinese and went to obscure museums like 北京鲁迅博物馆 Beijing Lu Xun Museum (I think I was the only non-Chinese there) but it is where Lu Xun wrote 野草 one of my favourite pieces by him and one I did a presentation in class on. I occasionally was the subject of interest and often addressed in English and also Russian My Russian was "I don't speak Russian, I am English" which weirds folks out as apparently I have an almost native accent LOL I did get stared at a lot in China

  2. Thankfully I was in China in the 1990s so people didn't have smartphones and though because I have a beard and hairy legs and 1.90 m tall - I stood out and folks did talked about me. It was funny when I talked to them in Chinese with a Beijing accent LOL

  3. I was studying in Beijing and went on a trip to Xi'an got in the lift in the hotel and said "五楼" and for the rest of the journey I was complimented on my Chinese LOL
