  1. I believe Luxembourg went for free transport country-wide but it really is just the City of Luxembourg and surrounding countryside A lot of their office workers commute in from Germany, France and Belgium and the city cannot cope with the traffic.

In French there are two words: faubourg and banlieue for suburb Faubourg seems to come from being outside the historic gates of a medieval city so they tend now to be what we would think of as urban areas Banlieue is a more modern term and seems to correlate with dormitory places though often not with single family houses as European cities have moved inner city residents out to new developments (called "projects", I think, in the US) on the fringes of cities.

  3. I wonder if the rush to build metros in the 1970s was generated by the oil crisis in 1973 when oil prices quadrupled overnight I suspect that released some of the funding for new metro plans even if they were made in the earlier decades.

  4. BTW we have a mixed system in the town (in Germany) where I live it is a light-rail / tram system in the outreaches and goes underground in the city centre and we have a population of 350 000 approx.
