I have never studied Japanese but I did an evening degree course in Chinese and on my Summer School in Beijing with my 1 300 characters I could communicate and understand a lot of the signs in characters. I have to say I find the role Kanji (hanzi) play in Japanese weird as a kanji character can have a meaning - like the Chinese character or it can be a phonetic component from another Japanese synonym Plus Japanese syntax is much more alien than Chinese. As this was before computers or smartphones I had thousands of A8 flashcards with the chinese character on one side and an English translation on the other LOL (because writing them by hand helps memory too!)
