Comments by "TassieLorenzo" (@TassieLorenzo) on "VW Golf R vs Golf GTI Clubsport vs Cupra Leon 300: Steve Sutcliffe track battle | Auto Express" video.
True. But Steve makes the point that the Clubsport is more fun than the R, so if you're buying a hot hatch to have fun, steering response, liveliness etc, then that's the pick! Who cares which car has more traction or accelerates faster in a straight line? The GTI and Leon are both fast "enough" for that.

That's true. Yet strangely VW has a tyre lottery system where the Mk8 Golf GTI and R come on one of three summer tyres: Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Sport, Bridgestone Potenza S005A (Auto Express say Potenza Sport for the R, so maybe this has changed) or Hankook Ventus S1 evo3. So you don't even know which tyre you will get.

They aren't sportscars, they are hatchbacks!

Confusingly, it's a custom Super Sport with Asymmetric 5 tread pattern! It says Eagle F1 Super Sport on the sidewall, however.

"Literally every other review has the Golf R destroying the other two cars." Where? In a drag race from a standing start? Front wheel drive cars have less drivetrain loss than all wheel drive ones and also weigh less, quite the advantage on a circuit even if VW detunes the (otherwise identical) engines in the two other cars compared to the Golf R.

I can tell the difference between a 1300kg car and a 1500kg car (and 1000kg vs 1300kg, which is obviously no contest). So much more inertia and waiting in the 1500kg than 1300kg. As to 100kg? I'm not sure, but Sutcliffe is a racing driver so he can tell.

If type of tyres is so important -- why do VW fit a random choice of tyres to their cars depending on production variations? :) You can get one of three tyres on a brand new GTI or R depending on which day it's built.

If they were desperate they could have swapped the same wheels and tyres between all three cars, since they are all interchangable. But I dunno -- VW doesn't guarantee which tyre you will with your build anyway (you randomly get either Goodyear, Brigestone or Hankook), so does it matter? The Potenzas on test are the new S005 or Sport model that came out in the last year or so.

How come the Golf R's torque vectoring system doesn't seem to be working in this test? Seems odd. :)
