For overkill in WWII, I’d argue Second Narvik was a pretty ridiculous and inefficient one. Just send a Town-class, which would horribly dismantle all the German DDs anyways (and may actually been better at it due to a far higher rate of fire)

Ahh, the “Iowas can simply outrange any other battleship and blow all the competition out of the water because best radar fire control” myth that ignores that live-fire tests that show their actual effective range was NOT actually 30,000+ yards as assumed, but in line with other contemporary designs, even with radar.

@jameshope7933 Exactly. Honestly, this is the biggest thing I have to hold against the Italian 15” gun, the 16”/50 gun and the Japanese 18” gun. They shoot way further than the ships equipped with these guns can even aim, even the 16”/50 gun. And the 16”/50 gun and 18” gun are also intended for hits that are unlikely to happen in the first place (the 16”/50 gun was designed for deck hits at above 30,000 yards; the 18” gun was intended to hit below the waterline). Though at least they’d still be devastating against any belt armour ever put on a ship, which is really what they’d actually be hitting if they actually somehow ended up engaging another capital ship, so that’s arguably moot.
