There's no reason to colonize Mars for now when there's still plenty of room on our planet. Our goal in reaching Mars today should be to simply terraform that planet for future generations. If the Martian soil yields toxic produce for human consumption, the goal should be to process some Martian soil to render them safe for isolated gardening. A centrifuge space station should be built and sent to that planet to permanently orbit it. Crews can alternate working on the planet's surface every couple of weeks to do work and research via shuttles to and from the space station powered by fuel processed in situ. A space ship from earth resuplies and replaces crews every 2- year period at the closest Earth-Mars fly by. There is no reason to allow humans to permanently live on the surface of Mars only to watch them evolve into deformed humans now or in the future unless we have reduced ourselves into a Dr. Mengalev who experimented with humans. Mars can be a garden and factory producing fruits and growing animals while huge orbiting centrifuge space stations could be the places at where humans will live.
