  2. East Asians sat and slept on floors and ate with tables with a 1-1/2 foot legs. That's why they took their shoes and slippers off when in their houses decades ago. Now that they have adopted to sleeping on beds, sitting on chairs and eating at higher tables, there's no more point in taking your shoes off when in a house. Floors get mopped often enough. Not unless your streets are really putrid.

  3. Ice, some socks can be more smelly than shoes. It's sometimes debatable if exposing socks is a better alternative.
