the problem with allowing the groups the words are about to define their words, is that they're not offended by the actual word (as words are just arbitrary collections of sounds), they're offended by being negatively associate with that group. by telling people to stop using the word, they are hoping the word will go away and they will no longer be associate with it. But like adam said, words evolve quickly, and if we cant say one word, they will just make another, which those people will also inevitably get offended by. Moron/Idiot/Imbecile/Retard were all medical terms, before people started using them to offend people, then they had to think up a new one. Fat/stupid are the easiest insults to use, so any word that means these things will eventually turn into an insult. Ultimately it doesn't really matter if the "proper" words change, people will just adapt, but fighting to make words a slur is a pointless endless battle that is literally impossible to win. It just makes those people feel like they're fixing their problems, without having to actually do anything.
