Error 53 also happens with replacement screens not just a home button. The software checked the hids etc. on the hardware, and would deliberately lock out the user with the error 53. To my mind it looked more like them trying to funnel the repairs back to themselves and lock out any 3rd parties (also illegal under our consumer law). Apple was also found to be saying that they would not cover their tech under warranty if a 3rd party had touched it. This is illegal under Aus law, Apple had to replace the product with a brand new one, fix it or refund to the full paid value as it was their update that caused the issue. 9 mil is just the fine, Apple have taken a legal undertaking to repay, fix or replace with a brand new device any consumer who was duped by them, this is also at the consumers choice. SO if you bought an iphone brand new and years later had it bricked by Apple, they have to give you a full refund of what you paid if you choose. They are also going to be paying to be monitored by the ACCC going forward. Still piddly compared to what they have stockpiled next to the anthrax and CHUDS, but it's a start :)
