Carbs arnt the problem. It’s overconsumption of calories in general. The food pyramid also told people to eat more fruit and Veges and exercise more. Did that happen? How has the overall compliance rate to the food pyramid been since it was introduced? My guess is that it’s been negligible. Eat an appropriate amount of calories , get enough protein and micronutrients. Get your body moving. Do these things and you’re probably 99 percent of the way there. Just do these things in a way that you can stick to. No need to turn whole macro nutrients like carbs into boogymen. That just limits what people can eat and makes diet adherence more difficult.

@NicholasBrakespear you might have to be specific and define your terms , the things you listed were a little nebulous. Theres inconclusive evidence to suggest that it is addictive. It’s palatable - but that’s different from being addictive. There’s also limited evidence that it causes metabolic syndrome when calories are controlled. There is a relationship I grant you that , but it could just be because people who consume a lot of it are more likely to he over consuming calorie as well. What you said about the suppression of the satiety hormone , whether or not it’s true , is related to calories in - so it agrees well with what I said regardless. In fact , the consumption of fruits and vegetables (sources of fructose) is consistently linked to the improvement of all cause mortality rates and rates of disease. Aune et all (2017) found that consuming fruit and vegetables is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and all cause mortality. You may say that there are other things in fruit and Veges that counteract the effect of fructose but the fructose itself is harmful. Well Chiu et al analysed the literature that performed isocaloric exchanges of fructose for other carbohydrates and found it does not induce NAFLD in healthy participants. Do you know of any high quality studies that controlled for calories that suggest that fructose itself is a problem?

You’ve been listening to Bart Kay too much 😂 The first law of thermodynamics still applies to open systems , it’s just that the specific mathematical formula was calculated for closed systems- all other principles still apply. That is why CICO is a useful model when predicting weight changes in humans. Is there even a ‘food mass’ model that exists with any significant explanatory power?

@grumpyoldben calorie tracking and CICO as a model are two different things. There are significant challenges to using calorie tracking as a tool to lose weight , but that doenst mean A) that ifs not useful or B) that CICO doesn’t explain changes in weight. Your anecdotal evidence tells us very little other than you found a way to restrict calories that works for you. That’s a good thing , but what works for one person will not work for everyone. Restricting carbs also leads to a quick and significant loss in water weight (I’m not saying this accounts for all of your weight loss of course) - this is often why people buy into diets such as carnivore or keto - because they see immediate change on the scales when they get started. It’s just confirmation bias. I’m not saying low carb diets won’t work , they obviously work for a lot of people - but that’s because the find it easier to eat a reasonable amount of calories on those diets. Carbs arnt the real enemy.
